Symantec virut removal
- ·This removal tool must be run in Safe Mode.
- if you are on a network or have a full-time connection to the Internet, such as a DSL or cable modem, disconnect the computer from the network and Internet. Disable or password-protect file sharing, or set the shared files to Read Only, before reconnecting the computers to the network or to the Internet. Because this worm spreads by using shared folders on networked computers, to ensure that the worm does not reinfect the computer after it has been removed, Symantec suggests sharing with Read Only access or by using password protection.
- If you are removing an infection from a network, first make sure that all the shares are disabled or set to Read Only.

Post Removal Steps
Due to a bug in the threat, it may not be possible to repair all infected files. Any files that cannot be repaired will be indicated in the log file with status “(unrepairable) (renamed)”. The affected files will be renamed by appending “.unrep” to the end of the original file name to prevent accidental execution of the threat. To complete the removal process, you should restore these files from a trusted source.
AVG virut removal
if the infected computer is connected to LAN, disconnect it and re-connect only after all other computers have been checked and cleaned.
· Download file rmvirut.exe
· Then run the tool for removal of infected files. The tool will automatically scan all available discs and will try to heal the infected files. If an active virus is found in memory, the tool will ask the user to reboot the computer. Healing will be performed during operating system boot-up sequence, so any active virus cannot interfere with the healing process.

All very nice words but the Symantec simply used almost 2 hours to scan the computer in the save mode and did eliminate 2 threats with no results.
